Sharjarh Airport

A flexible radio communications system for United Arab Emirates

Delivering design and supporting the business; adaptable communications and centralised control for service delivery, monitoring and management. dPMR (Mode 3) in the UAE.

The third largest Middle East airfreight hub, Sharjah Airport is a strategic destination for eighteen carriers. Located to the south east of Sharjah the airport is an important hub for cargo and passengers. Traffic through the airport totals over 11 million passengers and 500 thousand tonnes of cargo making it a key commercial service resource in the region.

Relocated from the city centre, following development pressure on the immediate urban area, dPMR was selected to help the airport meet the growing demand for travel, and service sector industries in general, reflecting the overall renaissance of the region.

Sharjah International Airport has employed a digital trunking radio system based on narrowband FDMA dPMR technology. The system implemented provides eight simultaneous radio channels to meet operation requirements. The design goal was to provide a flexible radio communication system which supports a centralised application system for user management and monitoring.

The system operates in dPMR Mode 3 and supports full trunking capabilities for operations critical resource availability, particularly during peak traffic hours.

Due to the digital nature of the radio terminals, background noise is highly suppressed allowing reliable and clear radio communication which is vitally important in a high noise environment like an airport. This ensures clear communication between the airport staff as well as enhancing safety and security.

System Features

  • The simplicity of phased migration from analogue to dPMR made possible by the parallel architecture of the new system.
  • Flexibility; the system is scalable and can be extended and altered according to need. The capacity to schedule from a simple network up to very complicated systems with a lot of services.
  • User friendly interface for the radios that makes it very easy and convenient for users.
